What is the #CuraumaCase?
Chile - Since 2013, the "Curauma Case" is more than a private dispute over land plots. It involves the vision of Chilean entrepreneur Manuel Cruzat Infante, who, through his company Curauma S.A., sought to create "Curauma, the New City," the largest real estate project in central Chile since 1990. This project was planned as the natural expansion of Greater Valparaíso, strategically connecting Santiago and Valparaíso, aiming to become a hub for development in the central macro-zone. However, the case reveals a significant antagonist: Euroamerica Seguros de Vida, led by #HenryComber, a prominent figure also accused in October 2024 of orchestrating collusion in Chile’s casino industry. This financial institution, one of the country’s largest insurance companies, allegedly leveraged its influence to manipulate Curauma S.A.'s bankruptcy process, undermining Cruzat’s vision. Comber, whose business dealings have drawn scrutiny for alleged anticompetitive conduct, reportedly played a central role in securing control over Curauma's assets through financial maneuvers involving high-interest rates, which surpassed the legal Conventional Maximum Rate. The Curauma Case, therefore, extends beyond the original development project and uncovers extensive violations of Economic Public Order. The involvement of Euroamerica and Comber implicates a broader array of high-ranking executives, the financial system, trustees, the judiciary, and various authorities. This case underscores a significant social and economic loss, as Greater Valparaíso’s growth has been stalled for over a decade due to these alleged irregularities and conflicts of interest. All legal actions will be pursued, both within Chile and internationally, to ensure that sanctions prescribed by law are applied to the enormous "irregularities" in this case, regardless of the parties involved. These actions are anticipated to encompass individuals from both private and public organizations, as the Curauma Case brings to light a profound impact on economic and legal order in Chile.
